Spines very slightly tanned, slight rubbing, prelims and title pages mildly foxed o/w contents and plates very clean. All 3 vols attractively bound in light brown half leather and textured darker brown cloth, lettered gilt at the sine with 5 raised bands and gilt floral decorartion. Thanks to The Hague,for scholarship on this. The numerous lovely and lively wood-engraved illustrations complete this celebration of word and image. The engravings were executed by numerous outstanding craftsmen, noteworthy among them are C. A keen traveller, Fenn has travelled extensively through the United States, Canada, Europe, Egypt, Palestine, and the Sinai Peninsula. Some of Fenn's best work is contained in "Picturesque America," "Picturesque Europe," and "Picturesque Palestine". Most of the original paintings were made by J. Noteworthy are the artists who produced them. The superb steel engraved plates are printed here with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. In the preface to his biography on Wilson, Charles Moore Watson wrote that Wilson "probably did more than any other man to increase the knowledge of the geography and archeology of Asia Minor, Palestine and the adjacent countries". He was chairman of the Palestine Exploration Fund from 1901 until his death in 1905.
